Resident Spotlight Betty Hartigan

With January here, we’re excited to celebrate a very special birthday—Legacy Village of Murrells Inlet resident Betty Hartigan will soon turn 102. Born into the loving embrace of her parents, Francis and Andrew LaGatutta, in Buffalo, New York, Betty grew up as the lively middle child amid a bustling household that included her older brother Andrew, younger sister Francis, and baby brother Casey. Life in their traditional Italian family was filled with laughter, warmth, and the comforting smells of home-cooked meals.

From a young age, Betty was drawn to the heart of the home—the kitchen. She would often be found at her mother’s side, learning the art of Italian cooking, a passion that would flourish and stay with her throughout her life.

After graduating from Grover Cleveland High School, fate introduced Betty to Raymond on a blind date that would change her life forever. Raymond was home from serving overseas in Germany during World War II, just briefly before shipping back out. But distance couldn’t dim their connection. They kept their love alive through countless letters, pouring out their hearts until they were reunited and married soon after Raymond’s return.

Together, they built a vibrant family of five children: Patricia, Dennis, Michael, Linda, and John. Over the years, Betty's family blossomed with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren—a legacy so large, she jokes, it's impossible to count them all!

One of Betty’s most cherished traditions was her Sunday family dinners, a lively gathering around a table filled with love, stories, and of course, the pasta sauce that earned her the affectionate title of "queen of the kitchen." Those meals were more than food—they were a celebration of family, connection, and joy.

As Betty prepares to celebrate 102 remarkable years, we honor the story she’s woven—a tapestry of love, resilience, and heart. Happy upcoming birthday, Betty. We are truly blessed to have you as part of our community.
