Resident Spotlight
When you meet Angelo Scorzello, you’re not just shaking the hand of a kind neighbor—you’re connecting with a living legacy of honor, duty, and unwavering service.
Born on September 24, 1937, in the Bronx, New York, Angelo’s story is woven deeply into the fabric of American history. At just 18 years old, in 1955, he raised his right hand and enlisted in the United States Air Force—marking the beginning of an extraordinary journey that would span 62 years of dedicated service to his country and his community.
Angelo’s career reads like a blueprint for heroism. After the Air Force, he served with distinction in the New York City Corrections Department, the United States Army Reserve, the North Carolina National Guard, the South Carolina State Guard, the Myrtle Beach Police Department, and the Murrells Inlet Fire Department, where he served faithfully until the age of 80. Few can say they’ve devoted over six decades to protecting others—but Angelo wears that legacy humbly.
His service earned him countless commendations, including a Certificate of Recognition from the Department of Defense for his role in the Cold War (1945–1991) and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Secretary of the Army for his contributions during the Global War on Terrorism. Yet, despite the accolades, Angelo remains grounded in gratitude, family, and faith.
Angelo’s proudest titles, however, aren't on a uniform. He is the devoted husband to his beloved late wife, Marie, and a loving father to his son John Scorzello, father-in-law to Gillian Scorzello, and doting cat dad to his furry companion, Max. His eyes light up when he talks about his family, a clear reminder that the heart behind the uniform is just as strong as the soldier who wore it.
Today, Angelo continues to inspire those around him—not just with his stories, but with his presence. He is a man who embodies what it means to serve selflessly and live fully. Whether you find him sharing memories of his Bronx childhood, telling stories of camaraderie from the firehouse, or simply enjoying a quiet afternoon with Max, Angelo carries with him a calm strength and a gentle pride that’s felt by all who know him.
Please join us in honoring Angelo Scorzello, a true American hero, a devoted family man, and a cherished member of the Legacy Village of Murrells Inlet family. And perhaps sit for a while to hear a story or two. They just don’t make them like Angelo anymore.
